Our Treatments

Radiofrequency Ablation (ClosureFastTM)

Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment device that is placed into a diseased vein under ultrasound guidance through a small opening in the skin.
The small device delivers heat to the vein wall, causing it to shrink and seal closed.

Once the diseased vein is closed, blood will reroute itself to other healthy veins. The great thing about radiofrequency ablation is that its minimally invasive outpatient procedure that gets you back to normal the very same day.

Varithena Ablation

Varithena ablation is a quick, minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. A foam medication is injected into the vein, causing it to close and redirect blood to healthier veins. It helps reduce pain, swelling, and the appearance of varicose veins, with little downtime needed.

Micro Foam Sclerotherapy

An injectable foam that is used in treating varicose veins and larger diseased veins that worsen circulation.

The foam is injected under ultrasound guidance in an outpatient setting.
The treatment does not require any incisions and usually takes less than 30 minutes to administer. Patients may resume most activities same day and heavy exercise after 1 week.

Compounded Sclerotherapy

Compounded Sclerotherapy is a generic injectable foam that is administered to varicose veins with or without ultrasound guidance.

This is often the treatment of choice for small varicose veins and spider veins.

Sclerotherapy causes the vein to scar down and forces blood to reroute to healthier veins.

The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into the local tissue and eventually fades away. Sclerotherapy is often used at the end of a treatment plan for venous reflux disease.

Vein Disease Diagnosis in Spring Hill and Brentwood, TN

Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic Ultrasound is a non-invasive test that allows the evaluation of structures below the skin’s surface. It is the test of choice for evaluating vein problems. The ultrasound is performed in our office by a Registered Vascular Ultrasound Technician (RVT). Warmed ultrasound gel is applied to the leg, then the ultrasound probe is moved up and down to examine the deep and superficial leg veins. Images are taken first to map out the anatomy and rule out blood clots in the veins. Notes will be made of what deeper veins the surface varicose veins connect to in order to plan the best treatment approach. These images are created by sound waves and no radiation is involved in the exam.
Once the anatomy has been evaluated, the function of the veins is checked. This involves squeezing the legs to force the blood forward through the veins and seeing if the valves close properly. When the valves are working, the blood simply stops after the squeeze is released. When the valves are incompetent, the blood flows back down toward the feet and refills the veins. This is called reflux.

Vein Disease Diagnosis

Vein disorders are not always visible; therefore, modern vein disease diagnosis requires diagnostic techniques and tools to determine the cause and severity of the problem. Depending on the results of your screening examination, we may recommend additional tests such as diagnostic ultrasound to identify where and how badly your veins are damaged. The ultrasound examination is designed to evaluate the blood flow through the veins in your legs, localizing the problem areas.

Consultation Visit

We have many years of experience and are able to identify the cause of vein incompetence in all of our patients. Our providers perform the physical examinations and then correlate symptoms, physical examination findings, and ultrasound analysis to make the proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations. During your initial consultation, it is very important to us that you have time to review the ultrasound scan with your provider. We will also review your history, symptoms, and exam to determine the next steps for evaluation.

Varicose Vein Treatment in Spring Hill and Brentwood, TN

Varicose veins are abnormally enlarged veins at the surface of your skin which can appear to be bulged, twisted, or ropey. Diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins is frequently covered by insurance.
There are two types of thermal (heat) ablation procedures that close down abnormal veins: Endovenous Laser Ablation and Radiofrequency Ablation. Both of these treatments are FDA approved and performed in less than 30 minutes with success rates greater than 90% and very low recurrence rates. Patients can immediately return to normal activity that same day, with little or no pain.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

EVLA consists of inserting an FDA approved laser fiber into the affected vein. Laser energy (heat) is then delivered to the vein and seals it shut (ablation). Once the bad vein is closed, blood is naturally rerouted to the healthy veins which improve venous circulation.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

RFA consists of inserting an FDA approved catheter (VNUS ClosureFAST ®) into the affected vein. Radiofrequency energy (heat) is then delivered to the vein and seals it shut like EVLA. Once the bad vein is closed, blood is naturally rerouted to the healthy veins which improve venous circulation.
Varithena® (polidocanol injectable foam) is an FDA approved prescription medicine injected into abnormal veins under ultrasound guidance to seal them shut. Some patients receiving Varithena® only need a single treatment. Additional treatment may be needed, depending on the number and size of the veins to be treated.
Endovenous chemical ablation (also referred to as Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy) refers to the injection of a special medicine (sclerosant) into abnormal veins to seal them shut. As with other ablation procedures, the treatment is performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure safety and blood flow is naturally redirected to healthy veins.

Spider Vein Treatment in Spring Hill and Brentwood, TN

Diagnostic Ultrasound

At Trident Vein Center, we understand that the presence of spider veins can have a significant impact on self-image. Likewise, we also know the journey toward achieving vein-free skin is unique for everyone. That is why we are committed to providing high-quality and compassionate care to each patient. One of the most effective treatments we offer for spider veins is sclerotherapy.

Surface Sclerotherapy

Varicose vein disease and specifically spider veins are most commonly treated by Sclerotherapy. The treatment involves injecting a ‘sclerosant’ solution directly into the vein. The goal of treatment is irreversible venous closure (fibrotic occlusion) followed by absorption of the vein. Venous blood is then redirected from the abnormal vessel to healthy veins.

As a result, leg discomfort and cosmetic appearance improve. Both ‘liquid’ and ‘foam’ formulations are used. The liquid injection is used for smaller, surface veins. Foam injection has increased potency and thus is used to treat larger veins. In addition, foam can be observed under ultrasound, in real time, for better precision.

The Sclerotherapy Procedure at Trident Vein Center

The sclerotherapy procedure is straightforward and requires no anesthesia. Here’s what you can expect:

Consultation: Before treatment, you will visit our center for a consultation with our vein specialist, a highly trained NP. They will assess your medical history, conduct a physical examination, and possibly perform an ultrasound to determine if this treatment is the most appropriate option for your needs.

Treatment: During sclerotherapy treatment, you will be positioned on your back with your legs slightly elevated. A highly trained NP will then clean the treatment area with an antiseptic solution. A special solution is then injected into the vein, which causes swelling in the walls, allowing them to stick together and become sealed. This disrupts blood flow and results in a diminished vein appearance after a few weeks. You may experience some discomfort and cramping for one to two minutes, especially when more prominent veins are injected. However, every effort is made to help ensure your comfort for the duration of the treatment.

Post-Treatment Care: After the procedure, compression stockings or bandages may be applied to the treated areas to maintain pressure on the veins, minimize swelling, and enhance healing. You’ll be encouraged to walk and move around to prevent the formation of blood clots.

Follow-Up: You will have a follow-up visit to assess the success of the treatment and decide if additional sessions are needed.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy has numerous benefits, including:

  • Non-surgical treatment with no need for anesthesia
  • Minimal downtime
  • Relief from discomfort and pain associated with varicose and spider veins
  • Improvement in the appearance of the skin

There are some reasons why you might not be a suitable candidate for this treatment, like if you are pregnant, have an allergy to sclerosant, have active clotting or bleeding episodes and immobility.

VeinGogh Treatments in Brentwood, TN

The Latest Technology in Treating Small Spider Veins, Cherry Angiomas

The VeinGogh Ohmic Thermolysis System provides a superior solution for the treatment of spider veins on the legs, around your nose, lips and cheeks and “cherry angiomas”.

This device uses radio-frequency energy to destroy spider veins with a high degree of precision, thus making it easier than ever to remove unsightly veins on the body, legs, around your nose, lips and cheeks. VeinGogh treatment is considerably more advanced than laser technology because it is capable of pinpointing the damaged vein with greater precision, keeping the surrounding skin unharmed. By focusing specifically on the damaged vein, patients can eliminate the sunburn appearance that often results after laser treatments.

Cherry Angiomas

Do you suffer from those bright red spots on your face and body that slowly grow and become raised on your skin?

Cherry angiomas (“Campbell De Morgan spots” or “senile angiomas”) are clusters of tiny capillaries at the surface of the skin. They range in color from bright red to purple. When they first develop they may be only a tenth of a millimeter in diameter and are typically flat, appearing as small red dots. They usually grow to about one or two millimeters across and up to a centimeter or more in diameter. As they grow larger, they tend to expand in thickness and may take on a raised dome shape. Cherry angiomas appear spontaneously most commonly in middle age but can also occur in young people. The number and size of cherry angiomas usually increase with advancing age. They are usually harmless but cherry angiomas may bleed profusely if they are injured.

VeinGogh vein removal magically eliminates those cosmetically disturbing red spots permanently and in just a few seconds. Come in to see us at Trident Vein Center and in 30 minutes — using the VeinGogh procedure — you can leave our office without those red lines and spots! Your friends and family will wonder what happened to those seemingly permanent lines and spots.

VeinGogh vein removal is a painless solution to those particularly stubborn blood vessels that are resistant to sclerotherapy, laser, and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments. The VeinGogh procedure is the fast, easy way to reliably treat these and other cosmetically unacceptable conditions, often with less discomfort than older therapies. While other treatments can be expensive, have varying effectiveness with different skin types, and entail a risk of injury, VeinGogh vein treatment is quick, effective, and minimally invasive, using a hair-thin, insulated probe to instantly eliminate vessels dependably and permanently on any skin-type and any part of the body.

Conservative Measures in Spring Hill and Brentwood, TN

A trial of conservative therapy, ranging from 6 to 12 weeks, is often required by insurance companies before we can treat your varicose veins. Conservative measures include graduated compression stockings, exercise, periodic leg elevation, and Unna boots.

Medical grade compression stockings are often prescribed to control the painful symptoms of varicose veins and swelling in the legs. They are also required to aid in the healing process following vein treatment procedures. A consultation with Dr. Cunningham is necessary to determine the strength of the stocking needed to control your symptoms. We keep an ample supply in stock for our patients undergoing treatment, eliminating the need for an additional stop at the pharmacy.

Answers for common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

In your leg, you have two sets of veins. They are called deep veins and superficial veins.

Deep veins are in the deeper part of the leg where the muscles are, and superficial veins are right under the skin.

In healthy legs, the blood would circulate from the feet towards the heart in both sets of veins.

When someone has a venous insufficiency the blood will actually go up the deep veins and then go backwards into the superficial vein.

The blood will start pooling in the superficial veins.

Since the superficial veins are closest to the skin, they will start to bulge and create varicose veins. They are often bluish or purple in color.

Spider Veins are essentially a smaller version of varicose veins. They are red, purple, and blue vessels that are also twisted and turning. They are most often seen on the legs, chest, or face.

No. Varicose veins can occur deeper in the leg, where one can’t see them. Varicose veins are classified under the spectrum of venous insufficiency disease.

Venous insufficiency disease causes leg discomfort, swelling of the ankles and leg, itching, and weariness. Other signs and symptoms may be prickling, cramping, aching, and heaviness of the lower limbs after prolonged standing.

Keep an eye out for these symptoms besides simply visible veins.

In short, no. Exercise and compression stockings may help reduce some of the symptoms of varicose veins, but usually only medical treatment can effectively get rid of a varicose vein.

Untreated varicose veins can worsen, leading to rashes, sores, bleeding, or blood clots. In rare cases, they may cause deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.
